I'm just getting started in surfing. I am 5'7" and about 155 lbs. What would be the sized longboard for me?

I would start off with renting a 9' board and once you are comfortable with that buy a 8' it will take a while to get use to but you will be able to do turns easier and have more fun!!

I would try a 9' classic longboard, or close to that size. If you are starting off I would also suggest not buying one brand new. Look on Craigslist for good deals. Try to avoid one that has yellowed too much, and has too many dings. Don't try used sporting goods stores as their prices are way to expensive.

It really depends on 1. What you want to accomplish with your surfing, 2. How good an athlete you are, and 3. Where you plan on learning to surf.  The general guideline is that the bigger the board, the easier it'll be to paddle and catch waves.  Keep in mind that bigger doesn't necessarily mean longer.  You need to take the width and thickness into consideration.  With all this said, I would recommend a big retro-fish.  Most retro-fish are designed wider and thicker with minimal rocker, flat bottom, and a big swallowtail.  All of these features help make the board really easy to paddle and catch waves by reducing the drag in the water.  The more you can paddle and the more waves you catch, the faster you'll pick up the sport and get better.  Take a look at the following 8'4" fish - http://www.9fishsurf.com/koi.html
