ohkay, well my school has this 'no cut' policy and everybody that tries out makes a team. there's 'a' team, 'b gold' team, and 'b blue' team. i really wanna make 'a team' or 'b gold' but i dont know if i could.

i have NO idea where my dedication lies .

does anybody have any tips for bumping and setting, ESPECAILLY overhand serving. i cant seem to get it far enough . and i have a net, but i dont think it's tall enough and i'm afraid if i practice with it (serving and stuff) i'm not gonna be able to go over the net when i serve when i have tryouts at school.

and to people who didnt make the team or made the lowest team possible, how do you feel. i'm kind of nervous because i dont know how good i am and if i'm as good as the girls trying out. GOOOOSHHHH. lol,

well anyway, any tips you can give me?

  1. okay, First off, you need to try and stop worrying!  I know that's hard, cause I'm probably the biggest worry wart around but it will help you relax and do your best.

As for serving, I used to have a big problem overhand serving.  One summer, I went outside in my yard and just hit it everyday.  And I don't have a net, I just kind of estimated.  If you get your arm strong and you can serve far and hard, I think once you get to a standard net at school, it shouldn't be a problem on how high or low you can serve it.  And now, at tryouts, I got 10/10 serves over.  Try it, it really worked for me!

For bumping and setting, as mentioned by the previous answerer, try standing about 5 feet from a sturdy wall and bumping it back and forth to yourself and setting it back and forth to yourself.  If you're not a setter, I wouldn't worry about the setting too much, just get the basic's down.

Last year, I made the lowest possible team and at first I felt horrible.  But, it didn't turn out to be so bad.  I'm sure there are people worse then you, and that gives you the opportunity to shine!  We took 1st at a tournament and it's a great feeling! Whatever team you make, turn it into a learning experience and practice, practice all year long if possible to put you in the best position to make a better team next year.

At tryouts, be confident in your skills.  Do your best in everything that they test you on, no matter how tired or how much your legs and arms are hurting!  Go until you absolutely can't go anymore. Give 100% and that's all you can do.  Go to open gyms if your school does that, and show the coaches how much you want it.  Remember..Stay calm, confident, and have a good attitude and cheer other people on and you're sure to make a good team!     Good Luck! Hope I helped.

  2. Hey gurl...

You should try out because..I truly regret not trying out and then for me to see all my friends in volleball and then feeling bad because you missed all the excitement and fun...So, my answer for you is to go for it!! Even though u might not make or great if u do it all matters if u atleast gave it a try..and that is what i regret the most is me not trying and now...wondering what it would be like for my to be in the team..but, that me..but....go try out...it will feel good anyways...GO FOR IT!!!

(i HOPE THIS MAKES U FEEL THAT U CAN TRY OUT AND BUILD U CONFIDENCE A LIL..)   :)

  3. give it a shot! i am not on a volleyball team, but i do love it! anyway, we sometimes so volleyball in P.E., and when it is my turn to overhand serve, i toss it up in the air, pretend its my worst enemies head, and hit it as hard as i can! trust me, that works, take your anger out on the ball, girl! lol!

  4. My suggestion would be: Go to the try-out and make a team.

You need gym time to make yourself more confident. You might need a coach to help you, which would become available once you make a team. A, or BG, or BB is not so important at this level, don't get bothered by your personal pride.

You will get promoted if you work hard, on any team at any level.

    Have fun playing volleyball.

  5. I definitely went through about the exact same feelings trying out my freshmen year in HS. Here is my quick opinion, and a few suggestions for you.

Even if you make the bottom team, go ahead and go for it. A season of coaching can make a huge improvement and can make your skills jump enough so next year you will have what it takes.

As far as setting, try finding a flat wall, stand about 4-5 feet back from it, and try and set the ball over and over again into the same place on the wall. You can move around a bit and feel out what works best for you based on your height. Proper hand placement is basically thumbs close to touching each other and pointer fingers close to touching one another, so that those fingers make a diamond, then the rest of your fingers kind of loose. It makes kind of a basket for the ball, at makes it so you can quickly bounce the ball off  your hands, so you never get called for holding.

Bumping - DO NOT cross your thumbs while bumping, it is not only bad technique, but you can seriously injure your hands. Here is a link to a picture of a girl who is about to perform what I would guess to be a perfect bump pass. Notice that here thumbs are out of the way and she is aligned so the ball will hit in the middle of her forearms, not on her hands or her elbows.

Serving is a hard technique to master. Try doing some push ups (even the girlie ones) every day. The muscles along your neck and shoulders are very important. I haven't played in 3 years and those muscles are still huge because of it. The key to overhand serving is hitting the ball with the padded area of your hand just under the base of your fingers, and keeping your hand rigid. You want to ALWAYS hit the volleyball with the closest thing to a flat surface that you have, so you can control it better. Try a short toss (only 2-3 feet above your head) first, and try getting the timing right so that when you hit the ball your hand is slightly in front of your body and your elbow is bent a bit, so as you follow through on the serve your hand will be behind the ball with force. Here is a good video  has got great form. Watch how she moves and notice sometimes she has a little jump in there, which is something you might want to save until you have got serving down a bit.

I think that's all I have got. Good luck!
