I'm going for the e-guitar and want to know what are the major pros and cons of being self-taught (reading books and guides) versus having a teacher or taking a class? You think in the end the ability to play will come out the same?

  1. Tricky question, and depends where you're coming from.  I had a bit of all 3, actually:

    1)  Self-teaching meant I was on my own schedule.  Unfortunately, that meant I was on my own schedule, with my own structure, and while it was satisfying to plink away, there was no organized approach

    2)  Large-group class was nice because I had the chance to see what others were doing right (and wrong!), but it was frustrating because the class was going slow so as to not leave anyone behind

    3)  Private instruction really depends on where you are at and what your instructor wants for you.  I had one teacher that was a real phenom, but I was wasting his time because I needed to learn my damned chords, and that was frustrating for both of us- he was a Ferrari and I was a moped, and we both knew it.  The other instructor that comes to mind would not take any of my questions and just wanted to barrel along without explaining anything.  Yeah, didn't make it a month with him...

Long story short, I would say you should have a pro help you pick out the right gear for you, mess around with it for a month or three to see where you want to go with guitar, and then start with an intro large-group class and transition to a private instructor.  Would've saved myself quite a bit of money if I'd known that back when...  Good luck, and happy playing!

  2. I started out teaching myself then I got a teacher. I definitely like having a teacher better. It encourages me to practice and improve. You can learn styles that aren't in the books. And you can ask questions and get an immediate answer. My teacher tells funny, interesting stories and very inspiring. You can hear they way you could sound someday.

  3. Self taught is good cos' you will save up your money. after all it is not so difficult to understand these books.

But if you prefer having a teacher, then you will have someone who can point out your weaknessess, hence you can improve.

So, its actually up to you to decide what is your desire.
