Every ad I read mentions an orange or red or blue or black or green dot. What does the dot color mean?

  1. The only difference is the lie of the club.  Red dot is one degree flat, Black dot is standard.  Blue dot is one degree upright.  The lie of the club refers to how flat the bottom of the club is at impact.  If the toe of the club is too much up in the air at impact, you would tend to hit the ball to the left.  If the heel is too much in the air at impact, you would tend to hit the ball to the right.  The color code is only for the lie of the club, but it is very important because at 150 yards, if the lie of the club is off one degree, your ball is 20 feet offline (no fault of your swing).  So get the clubs because they're good clubs, then take them to PING and have them fit (lied) to you.  It is simply them watching you hit a few balls and making a small adjustment if needed.  No big deal, but you should get them checked for your swing.

  2. If you're going to buy used Ping clubs, you need to go to a Ping retailer and do a fitting. It's free and you're not obligated to buy clubs there when it's over. Find out the correct setup for you, then try to find a used set with specs as close to those decided in your fitting as possible. Try to at LEAST get the correct color code and correct flex of shaft.

As far as bending the clubs to the correct angle as the last person suggested, I do not recommend buying them blindly then trying that. Many clubmakers (the only people who bend clubs) will not touch Pings because they are made of very hard steel, and thus very brittle and easy to break when bending. Secondly, if you end up with clubs that are too far off of what your ideal lie angle is, the clubmakers who actually will work on Pings will not be able to change them as much as is needed.

You should never, ever buy Ping clubs if you do not know the proper setup for you. They are one of the few major manufacturers that fits EVERY set of clubs they sell, so you're doing yourself a huge disservice, and wasting your money if you buy ill-fitted Pings.
