  1. I have a Garmin NUVI 350, which is about the least expensive GPS unit with text to speech capabilities.  I did a lot of research online and concluded that the navigational software in the Garmin ( Navteq ) is superior to that found in the TomTom units.  The Garmin has only an on/off button, all other controls are accessed through the excellent touch screen interface.  We haven't yet been steered wrong by the Garmin, and my wife uses it daily to attend meetings statewide.  We use it on all our family trips to find lodging, fuel and food, in addition to guiding us to our destination.

It's out of the box ready to go, I plugged in the power source, turned on the unit and it took about 30 seconds to capture a satellite signal,  then was raring to go.  It took less than 10 seconds to calculate a 1500 mile trip and we didn't miss a turn.  If you have to detour for some reason, the Garmin also recalculates the best way to get to your destination from your current position.  If you stop for lunch and turn the unit off, it will pick right back up where you left off.

If you can wait a couple of days, order it online, rather than purchasing it at a store.  I saved $100 by finding an online site rather than buying it at the cheapest local outlet.  I bought mine from PCnation.com and at the time, they were offering overnight delivery through DHL for only $11 .  They're currently selling for under $300, which is an excellent deal.

The 360 and higher models have Bluetooth and MP3 capabilities I didn't need, but if you like those features, look to an upgraded model.  Also, the Garmin mount is the best available.  My GPS never, ever falls off the windshield and that was one of the most common complaints I read about other models.  I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to be driving down the freeway and have the GPS fall between your legs...
