I'm looking for a bike?

Hi, I'll be going to college for the first time near Boston this fall, and thought I'd buy myself a new bicycle and save on gas.

Can anyone recommend a good brand?

requirements are simple:

$300 budget (need a lock and helmet too)

something good for getting around in a city, i might take it on subways/buses

also any bike shop recommendations near/in boston would be nice. I'll actually be living in Quincy, MA.

Thanks!

  1. If all you are going to do is tool around campus, get the cheapest piece-of-c**p bike you can find, like one of those $100 Walmart jobbies.

Lock one of those up and leave it unattended, no thief would bother to steal parts off it.  And if it does get hit, at least it's no big loss.

You want a bike that you don't have to bother quick-releasing the wheels or seat when locking up, because you don't have time to mess with those things when you are rushing off to class.

  2. First if your going to college, there will be an over abundance of used inexpensive bikes to pick from. Check out the bulletin boards, Craigslist, school paper. Why blow money on a nice new bike that will likely be parked outside, when you can get a good used bike for less? A used bike is less likely to get stolen.

For campus a Magna, Huffy, Schwinn, Trek, or Diamond will serve you well.
