  1. I agree on the Polar.

  2. You'll get many recs for Polar.

Timex HRMs are very good for the money.  Underrated product.

MIO makes monitors that are a bit more feminine and don't look as goofy for casual wear.

  3. The Polar F6 seems to be a good deal:

I use a Sigma PC-15 myself.  I've found it to be very reliable.

I noted one add for a Polar hrm in which the chest strap was sold seperately.  That should not be the case!  You should get one automatically.

  4. My GF gave me a Timex HRM for Christmas. It was about $35, including the chest strap, and has worked flawlessly. She got it at the Timex store in the local mega-mall.

    HTH

  5. I agree with everyone else that Polar is the one to get. Polar is certainly the most popular brand.

Polar F4, F6 and F11 are all good general heart rate monitors for fitness training, differing in features and price. The choice of which one to get depends primarily on your requirements and budget. The links in the source box will have more information about them, including feature comparisons between them.
