Due to some hormonal issues, it has been recommended that my sister stay away from Bisphenol A (BPA) as much as possible. However, she'll likely need fillings for a cavity and so we are trying to find a dentist in the Houston, Texas, USA area that uses BPA-free fillings. Can anyone help with a resource? Thanks.

  1. Composite dental filling material (ie tooth colored) has ingredients that are derived from BPA but does not have BPA in it.  Therefore the exposure to BPA from composite is minimal.

As previously answered, silver-mercury amalgam is also a reasonable alternative.

The most inert materials are gold or porcelain. However, there is much more work involved and the fee is much greater.  Gold and porcelain are usually used for large restorations that require much more strength and durability.

  2. The alternative to the composite resins with BPA is dental amalgam.  Most dentists use this, and the general consensus is that it is pretty safe.  (You will probably ingest more mercury from drinking water or canned tuna than you will be exposed to in a dental filling).

To learn more about these materials from a reliable and respected source, check out www.pubmed.com and type in the keywords you are interested in.  This will bring up the work of real researchers who have objectively studied the risks and benefits, which you might want to be familiar with since there is a lot of bs desseminated out there.  Don't believe everything people tell you. ;)
