I'm looking for a good digital camcorder to take to college, but where should I start when I'm hunting?

I'll be starting college in august and i want to get a digital camcorder...I've been using an ancient vhs one for the last couple years...so i have no idea what to do!!! what should i get? what would you recommend? and one major thing, how much does it cost? thank you!
