Question:

I'm looking for a good online school...Help, please?

I'm in high school, tenth grade. I'm fifteen, and I'm really, really anti-social. I don't try to be, but I was made that way after so many years of worthless people saying worthless things. The traditional high school setting isn't working out; I don't work well around others. I feel shadowed and unimportant, and then I keep telling myself that there's no way I'll ever catch up. I've got good reading comprehension skills, and I don't need someone fluttering around me to get me to work.

Anyway...My family isn't doing too well in the financial arena, so something crazily expensive won't do. And I would really like to start as quickly as is humanly possible; I know I'm being impractical, but within days would be lovely. xD;

Um...I've read somewhere that there are schools online that are almost free? If you answer this question, make sure the schools you give me are accredited. I don't want to go through all this with nothing in the end for all my effort.

Thank you so much! Please answer!

  2. Brigham Young University (BYU) is one of the currently popular online high school program providers. Their online courses are usually considered inferior to accredited high school credits and courses run $100-$200 per semester. They also are a Mormon and the curriculum' has a lot to do with ethics and/or religion.

    You could talk to someone in the school counseling department about educational options. At lest one person can usually produce more reliable information than Internet sources these days. Most public high school counselors in the U.S. have a college and/or career counseling emphasis 'on their positions.

  3. I don't know which state you live in but all are supposed to give parents an option to home school their children, within guidelines.  I live in Virginia and each school system within the state have regulation control over the matter.  In Virginia Beach, you can go online for the city school system website and find all kinds of information.  You will need to pick a home school from a list provided on the website.  We had to show a copy of a diploma from high school or other higher learning option such as college, or nursing school, etc.  You have to have contacted the chosen school and gotten a letter showing that you have enrolled the child (or teen) in that school and present a copy of the curriculum from that school.  We chose a correspondence school with 3 national accreditations and submitted everything required to the school division who has approval rights and obtained approval to educate our child at home.  He had to have all of his vaccinations the same as he would have had to attend in the school buildings in this city.  If we wanted to do the teaching ourselves the procedure is more difficult because we would have to have a teaching certificate and submit lesson plans.  The correspondence school eased us over that bump and all we needed to do at the end of the year was to submit a report card/progress report in a timely manner to request approval to continue and for the child to receive credit for his classes.  We are waitng for that decision now but do not anticipate any problem with that.  The national testing must be done in a proctor situation as well before the school system will approve and honor our request to move forward; however, with the correspondence school, we have been told that is not necessary for our child.  Again, check with the proper school authorities, follow the letter of their communications, make note of who you speak with and what was said and get as much as is humanly possible in writing.  When you check out the schools used for the instructional portion of this effort, they will give you the costs and financing options.  I found this correspondence school to be financially reasonable, payments are not hard to handle and the school product is excellent.  We received everything we needed to teach this child, from the books, the exams, the mailing envelopes for payments and exams, instructions and periodic newsletters along with online chats and class helps as well as access to counselors and other helpers for less than $1200 for all 4 years.  Heck, they even sent a pen to use for homework.  Our child has a B average even though we can't make him like doing schoolwork.  I don't know if the amount I quoted is still the amount they charge but they will need to give you that information.  You will also have a choice of college preparation classes or the classes geared to only get the kid through.  We are using the college prep in order to give him something to work on and to get him to wrap his head around the fact that he is not lacking in ability and that he can take this knowledge even further when he decides that's where he wants to go.  This school was founded by Harvard and either Princeton or Yale professors over 100 years ago to provide an education that meets the needs of our children.  I like that there is a challenge and they support me in any way they can to help me get this responsibility carried out.  Good luck but also try a little counselling to help you be more accepting of people as well.  After all, we all have to live together.
