  1. Summer is high season in Alaska, so your tickets are going to be expensive. Anchorage has the largest airport, where you can fish, or Seward and Kenai are less than a few hours from Anchorage where you can fish for halibut and salmon.

My suggestion would be to go to Seward.

  2. In Alaska there is 'sport fishing' .......as in we are going out to have fun fishing - and this is usually salmon, and then we have 'freezer filling' fishing - which is usually halibut.  Dipnets and subsistance neting is not allowed for non-residents.

Since you cannot bring any meat products across the Canadian border that have not been professionally canned - doing an inexpensive drive up is out of the question.

If you are hoping to bring home a couple hundered pounds of fish to fill your freezer and that of friends - then you are looking for a halibut charter.  On a halibut charter you pony up $250 or more per person and spend 8-10 hours bottom fishing for halibut on the open ocean.  I can get boring, and, novice tend to get sea sick.  However, since the average halibut is 150 pounds and 80% is edible, and you are allowed two per day - this will probably be the biggest fish you ever catch in your lives!

Salmon fishing is trickier - done from a small agile powerful boat on a river, or , simply standing on the river bank.  The best salmon to catch is Sockeye or Reds - they have the highest fat content, run around 8lb, and taste the best.  Meat is like a fire extinguisher red.  They don't bite as easily as some other species of salmon.

Next is King Salmon - these can go 65 to 90 pounds.  Not unusual for these to also be caught in open ocean on a combination halibut and King charter.  You catch the limit of halibut then troll home for Kings.

Silver salmon are my favorite - about 12-16 lbs they fight the most, and, hit really nice on prepared eggs.

The worst salmon are pinks - typically these are not eaten by Alaskans that have had the other species.  However, pinks will hit on near anything - a pocket comb if you attach it to a spin reel!  Only kids and new folks fish for these.

Flying into Anchorage you can easily drive south in a rental car to Seward or furthure to Soldotna or even Homer for all of the above.  This is probably your most cost effective stop point since anyplace else in Alaska will require a second flight from Anchorage.

Typically your charter supplies everything - you just bring a coat and lunch.  The mate will bait your hook and fillet the fish as it comes on board - be sure to tip him.  They will also help you freeze it.  Plan on staying around a day for it to freeze good, most hotels here have free freezer space, and even the Anch airport has freezer storage for a fee.
