Question:

I'm looking for a good quality, reasonable kayak. Any recommendations?

I'm thinking I'll be using it on rivers, smaller lakes to begin with. Maybe I'll one day get enough guts to go on Lake Superior for longer multi-day trips... I'm new to this, and stability is important. But I also want something that I'll be happy with that it will last me quite a while and I'll be able to "grow into."

I think it'd be best if i got one for "larger paddlers" -- not sure what the cut off point is for that, but i'm not tiny. ;)

Send me any brands, types, suggestions. 17' or 15'? Any input would be appreciated. :)

  1. Unfortunately, there is a big difference between rivers, small lakes and  touring on Lake Superior.  For inland lakes and rivers, a general recreation kayak would be a good choice, unless you want to get into whtie water, in which case you should choose a white water play boat.

I've done a few trips in the Apolstle Islands of Lake Suprior and you really want a touring or sea kayak.   Although Lake Superior is a lake,  the conditions there should not be taken lightly.   A toruing kayak could certainly be used for day trips on non-white inland rivers and lakes.

You'll have a range of materials to choose from including plastic, fiberglass and kevlar.   Plastic is durable, takes a lot of bangs, but is heavier and a bit slower when touring.

I really recommned you go to several shops sellling kayaks and talk to knowledgeable sales people.  Designs change frequently and there are many good manufacturers. Fit is much more important than with a canoe, so you want to actually get in them before purchasing one.
