does anyone know of a good over the counter tooth whitening system that has proven results and doesn't take a while to see results, that you would use before getting the zoom or custom white trays?

  1. My dental office has also had big problems with the Zoom method,  and don't carry it anymore.   It also caused high sensitivity in the teeth of people who tried it ( and I mean HIGH sensitivity).    Try the other methods first to get the best results they are  capable of before trying the Zoom.   Once Zoom does it's thing,  your teeth will be sensitive for a long,  long time,  and in my opinion,   the pain is not worth the whiteness they provide.

  2. I have used this mixture for awhile, and it works great!! It's inexpensive.

Buy plain hydrogen peroxide, buy you favorite tasting mouthwash. Mix one part peroxide to 2 parts mouthwash,

Swish around your mouth for about 60 seconds prior to brushing . It starts working almost imediately :)

  3. One popular tooth whitening product that you can use is bleaching solution that contains peroxide for bleaching tooth enamel. The bleaching agent in these products is usually carbamide peroxide, which is available in 10, 16 and 22 percent concentrations.

Whiteners that contain peroxide typically come in gel form and are placed in a mouthguard. Some products are used twice a day for 2 weeks while others are intended for overnight use for a 1 to 2 weeks period. If you can obtain the bleaching solution from your dentist, he will be able to construct a custom mouth guard to fit your teeth precisely. Currently, the American Dental Association endorses only dentist-dispensed home-use percent carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels.

In addition to bleaching solution, whitening strips are increasingly being used as a preferred tooth whitening product. For instance, you are now able to get your hands on a set of Crest Whitestrips Supreme from any convenience store. The flexible, invisible strips are coated with an enamel-safe tooth bleaching gel. To whiten your teeth, you simply place the strips on your teeth and wear them for about 15 to 30 minutes each day. After a period of about 21 days, you should be able to see a significant difference on the brightness of your teeth.

  4. Everyone's teeth bleach differently depending on your age, what kind of stains you have on your teeth, and genetics.  Unless you are pretty young and don't have really stained teeth the over the counter ones will most likely take a while to get the desired results.  That's not to say you should not try them but if you want immediate results the zoom is really the best way to go although I know it is an expensive option.  I usually recommend the trays first, because at my office if you later decide you want the zoom also you just pay the difference since the zoom comes with trays.

One of my patients told me he bought a bleaching kit from CVS where you boil this small plastic sheet and then take it out while it is still really hot and mold it to your teeth as a substitute for the trays.  Then he just bought the bleach from our office that we sell for our trays.  I do want to emphasize though that he said it was extremely unpleasant handling the hot plastic.

    Good luck.

  5. I would highly reccomend NOT getting the Zoom. We have it at the office i work at and we always try to get the patients to do the take home trays (that we made in office) So here's the deal. Zoom is fairly expensive, and everyone's teeth whiten at different times. So if you pay all the money for zoom and your not movie star white, you're going to be dissapointed. And also, if they get any of the Zoom bleach on your gums it will turn them white and hurt VERY badly. Good luck!
