Question:

I'm looking for a new car, but I'm not sure how to find what I'm looking for, or if it exists.?

I currently have a 1981 Chevy Corvette. It's an awesome car, it can go really fast, and it's s**y as h**l. However, there is zero storage capacity, it has terrible mpg, it can't go off-road (or even over speed bumps) and it is a used car.

I would like something new, hopefully with these capabilities:

-Decent miles per gallon

-Off-road capabilities. Maybe not as hardcore as a Jeep or a Hummer, but something that can drive on mountain roads.

-Storage capacity. I'm into outdoor sports.

-Maybe towing capability. At least for a Jet-ski or small trailer.

-Relatively low-priced.

Thanks.

  1. Toyota RAV4. Ford escape, Jeep Patriot, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Saturn VUE, Nissan Rouge and Honda CRV all start at around 20K and have 5-7 seats. Everything except the Jeep was in a Car and Driver road Test and did fairly well.

The Saturn VUE, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and the Nissan Rouge claimed the top 4, so I'd recommend those 4.

  2. Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder

    Subaru Impreza or Legacy

    Toyota 4Runner

  3. Either your suspension is shot, or it's been modified, if it can't go over a speed bump.  Something is wrong.  And whether it can go off-road depends what you mean by off-road.

Mountain roads are NOT off-road.  Fire trails and logging roads are debatable.

Anyhow, depending on what you mean by "decent mpg," I think a Subaru would be exactly what you're looking for.  Subaru has the best AWD systems for steep terrain and poor traction (others may have better road/performance-oriented ones), their wagons have plenty of storage, the base models all get high-20s EPA fuel economy (and CAN do around 30 mpg), most of them can tow around 1 ton, and new, their vehicles are all between about 17k and 35k.

Also, the Forester XT, Impreza WRX, STI, and Legacy GT should all be faster than your Corvette.  The STI isn't too far off from a NEW (base model) Corvette, for that matter.  And if we're talking about UNPAVED mountain roads, it would kick the **** out of it there (that's what it was made for).

  4. Honda CR-V

    don't look any further
