Question:

I'm looking for a new card game to play?

My husband and I love card games, and we're getting tired of playing the same ones we always play. We already have things like Uno, Skip-Bo, and Phase 10, and we play rummy and five crowns too. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

  3. Well, keep an open mind here, did you know that tarot cards were originally created for playing card games? The games are usually played with French suited packs now (you wouldn't recognise them as tarot) but the old Italian suits and trumps are still played in Italy, Sicily and Switzerland.

The old trumps were not anything occult (and never troubled the church), instead, they took as their theme a traditional triumph procession of the time - hence they were called trionfi, meaning triumphs, and from which we get the word trump. In fact, it was the invention of tarot that marked the invention of trumps in card games! Some historians think that they depict the triumph procession held to mark the birth of Bianca Visconti, the cards themselves were commissioned to celebrate her marriage.

The French tarot game is particularly popular - I read somewhere that it is now the second most popular card game in France! There is a good range of games for any number of players, so there's a game for every occasion.

Anyway, you can find all the rules, cards, links to where you can buy them at my website www.tarocchino.com (my site has Anglicised terms and conventions, to try and make learning a little easier). - please note that while I do link to some web stores, I am not affiliated with them, it is a non-commercial site to promote the games.

If you prefer original language terms, you can find a selection of rules at www.pagat.com - there are about 12 tarot games listed at this site but you should browse beyond them, as pagat is probably the best on-line resource for card games.

  4. Have you tried:

    Spades

    Hearts

    Canasta

    Euchre

    Bridge

    Whist

    Cribbage

And for a break from cards altogether, try:

    Scrabble

    Trouble

    Trivial Persuit

    Backgammon (or Acy-Deucy)

    Parchesi
