I'm looking for a nice SWEET red wine ?

Question

I'm looking for a sweet red wine because i know of sweet whites but not of sweet reds and i do not like any dry wines of any kind .

Any help will be much appreciated.

Duplin Hatteras Red or Carolina Red.

They may not be available where you live as they are sold mostly in the southeast US where muscadine and scuppernong are very popular. There is alot to be said about these grapes as they offer more antioxidants than any other fruit (including other grapes) and they only grow in a small area mostly NC, SC, and Virginia. While many orchards have tried worldwide, they have not been able to get them to grow. The health benefits are so great that China has tried for years to grow them and has ordered more seeds from NC than can be delivered in 50 years.

Also, I recently visited the winery at Duplin (Rose Hill, NC) and was very impressed.

I'm an avid wine drinker and when I want a sweeter red wine I always go with Lambrusco. It has a little bit of a sparkle to it, similar to Riesling, and it's best when it has been chilled. Another way to find a sweet wine is by reading the label carefully: Secco means dry,  Amabile means sweet.

kindzmarauli is a sweet red from georgia.  just tried it yesterday for the first time.  yum!

note:  sangria is not a type of red wine.  it is a drink that has red wine in it.  it usually has some liquor and fruit juice in it as well.  it is a sweet drink however and some companies make and bottle it so you may like that too.  good luck!

I have been in love with a particular maker of my favorite sweet red wine for some time. Some people will tell you that "sweet" wine isn't real wine, that it can't be good. Don't listen to them; even wine manufacturers who have previously concentrated on the dry wines appreciated by my grandmother and father are realizing that there are people out here who would enjoy wine if it were a bit sweeter.

My favorite sweet wine is made by Duplin, and Duplin sells this wine in grocery stores and mass marketers; I've bought it at Wal-Mart, Costco, and Food Lion (local popular grocery store). You shouldn't have a problem finding it. When you go into the wine selection, look for a bottle whose label is dominated by a cream color and a lighthouse. "Duplin" should be on it large enough to spot easily from several steps away. For the sweet red wine, look for the Carolina Red or the Hattaras Red. They are both the sweet reds you asked for, and they're made from muscadines.

Muscadines are those grape-like fruits with a think outer skin. If you pick and eat them fresh, you would bite a slit in the outer skin and suck out the very sweet inside. The skin has a rather bitter or sour taste. In any case, the wines taste a lot like real, sweet muscadines; most fruity wines do not taste very much like the fruit they say they are made from.

I have also recently tried Duplin's Carlos. It's still made from muscadines, but it's softer and dryer. It's closer to a traditional white, but it is still sweet enough for me to drink and enjoy.

Hi,

First, figure out what you mean by "sweet". Many people confuse sweet with fruit. I'm guessing you mean light and fruity if you enjoy white wines.

The lightest, fruitiest red wine will probably be a Beaujolais. Some Pinot Noir and Zinfandel may also be fruity enough for you. I wouldn't buy an inexpensive Pinot Noir though, they can be very difficult to grow so the good ones cost more.

If you really mean sweet as in sugary, a dessert wine may be what you'll like. I see a few above mention port. Those are generally quite heavy though and are best served after your meal.

I am a dry wine lover, but I occasionally try something sweet and have found one that I really enjoy. It's an Italian red from the Veneto region.

called Recioto della Valpolicello. Another nice wine from that same region is Torcolato.

Generally, the Italian sweets are not as sweet as their French counterpart but will satisfy even those with a very sweet tooth.

Port is an excellent sweet, rich and thick red wine.  There are two main types: ruby or tawny.  Ruby port is less rich while Tawny port tends to be aged and more expensive.  Port goes well with blue or cheddar cheeses.  With a main course, it goes well with a roasted chicken or duck.  With dessert, port is fantastic with chocolate.
