I'm looking for activities to get a five year old ready for school. Any suggestions?

I need help finding activities to help get a five year old girl ready for school. Things like alphabet activities and writing activities would be great! Even websites with printables would be awesome.

Fun, fun, fun! Has tons of activities and games for alphabet learning, reading, sounds, writing, etc. I am a early childhood ed. major and one of my professors recommended this site. I introduced it to my 5 year old niece and she absolutely loved it. Kept her busy for weeks. I will use it in my future classroom.

my whole family used the grade books form k-mart and wal-mart. they are great for the kids.

just try to make her think learning is fun by singing with her the alphabet.

There is no need to get her ready for pre-K.  Children learn at this age through play.  Making her buckle down and write or memorize the alphabet will do more harm than good.  The first few weeks of school will be working on her social and fine motor skills.  She will not be able to control a pencil and direct it because her hands have not developed the muscles nessary to make letters.  Play hand games and let her crumple up paper to build finger muscles.  Let her draw straight lines and circles.  At this time you just need to read to her at least 15-20 min a day.  This helps more than anything.  Pre-K will help her with the ABC'S and 123's you just need to be active with her when she comes home from school with assignments.  Children learn at their own pace please do not try to push her.

Well, I don't know if websites would be very good because she won't get that in school.  Maybe give her a 15-30 min. period like school, where you give her a piece of paper and tell her to color something specific (like a cat, dog, etc.) and she can't get up or talk.  Also, be sure she doesn't just sit there and daydream for a while.  I had that trouble in k-5.  I would miss part of my lessons.  Just a suggestion!  Good luck with school!!!

When I was teaching grades K-3 the kids loved to go on Starfall.com during computer time.. BEST PART= It is greatly educational, especially if you sit them and reinforce what it is helping them learn.

Also, get the big lined paper and use highlighter to write names, phone number, address, etc and have him or her write it (trace) and say it. Eventually omit the highlighted portions and work on doing it without. These will be some of the biggest things they will need to know, in addition to colors, shapes, etc. The kids in Kindergarten I taught also loved to play "treasure hunt". I would choose a child sitting quietly and tell them to "find something oval" and when they did they could go line up for PE, Music, etc. Obviously mix up giving them shapes, colors or letters to find in the room you are in.

You can go to nickjr.com.  There's all kinds of placemats and wipe off exercise books at Wal-Mart, Target, grocery store.  You can make it routine as well with household things.
