since I now have an HD cable box but only one HDMI output on my HDTV Sony Bravia. Which HDMI switcher would you recommend and why? I'm currently browsing ebay for this switcher since I saw BestBuy had some backordered.

  1. HDMI won't always offer the best picture.  You'll find quite often that the COMPONENT connection will look better than your HDMI cable.  Hook up your various equipment with BOTH "component" and "HDMI" for an A/B comparison.  You might me suprised at what you find  (and save a bundle on your A/V cables, too).

  2. I am with A/V Truths : I have seen TVs where HDMI input has far more noise than component - it could be that the TV has a far more efficient analog filter. Component has been used by video professionals for years now, don't hung up so much on HDMI.

However, if you insist, make sure the switch supports HDCP.

I usually recommend Gefen switches (www.gefen.com).

There are some fancy HDMI switches with their own remote control.

  3. Stick to either Monoprice or Oppo.  They work well, aren't expensive, and can be used with a universal IR remote such as Harmony.

  4. HDMI is better 99% of the time!  Because you do not need D to A and then A to D conversion, which is required if you use any analog connection (component, etc).

You can get XtremeHD 4-port HDMI switch for under $100.  I used it - it works great, but does not support HDMI 1.3a.

This one supports HDMI 1.3a, and works great!  You can also get cheap HDMI cables form the same place - starting at $5!  Make sure you get HDMI 1.3a certified cables.

They also sell $50 HDMI switches, but I never tried them.

  5. First, It is correct to state that HDMI will provide a better image. The lack of encoding analog component to digital display means less processing. Less processing = better image.

As far as an HDMI switcher, I'd stay away from anything that is passive (does not plug in to an A/C outlet) Mechanical switchers ( Also known as clunkers) do not provide good signal isolation or a good switch. They can also bleed signal.
