  1. do what i do

i was fed up with having no alternative, and so much to the annoyance of the staff, i take my time, and i place all my fruits and veggies in the paper bags they provide for the mushrooms!

bananas and oranges etc i just put in loose, but apples, grapes tomatoes etc, i use the mushroom bags, it drives the cashier nuts but i dont care, our recycling programme has no provision for plastic bags so i use these instead and they go in my composter!

i dont care how embarrasing it is at the checkout

  2. I don't have one, nor do I have a source, but I've seen sturdy thread versions of the mesh bags like the ones onions come in.  You could recycle the mesh bags oranges, onions or such come in until you find a source.  I don't USE bags for most of the produce I buy.

I found a couple of sources:

  3. do they recycle where you live,  theses bags are easy recyle ones

  4. Your a wise person to use the cloth bags, my hats off to you... What I do is ask for smaller paper bags to put the wet produce in other items that are not wet I keep loose...

Then a home I wash and let dry then put in containers that are like Tupperware... Seal in the freshness...

    Eat healthy, eat well...

  5. That's an interesting question. I work in a supermarket and I havent seen anyone come up with an alternative idea except to not put their fruit + veges in individual plastic bags. Unfortunately many people prefer to have their veges in an individual bag.

Perhaps you could try and cutback to begin with-if you are buying something that you dont think needs to be put in a bag, dont. For example, melons, prewrapped fresh produce (like bags of fruit, organic produce) or anything with a barrier between the part you eat and what it touches (like a thick skin in melons, wrapping). Although you'll still be using some bags, it at least reduces they amount :)
