Our son will be three in April and was diagnosed in May of '07. If you have had good experiences with the resources and services in your area, I'd like to hear. Please only respond if you are the parent or long-term care giver for an autistic child between the ages of 2 and 5. If you have had poor experiences, I wouldn't mind hearing about those either. I'm looking for school-type care, PCAs, insurance, etc. If you'd share the general cost of living for your area as well, it would be appreciated. Thanks and serious replies only.

  1. I am school psychologist in North NJ. Unfortunately, this area has a very high rate of Autism but because of that, their are tons of schools for children with autism.  Unfortunately again, The area is very costly.

  2. Well,I wouldn`t say, that i`m satisfied, with what my state has to offer.Michigan.You do get a home subsidy check from the state each month.I`m not sure if that is availabel in all states.I think the respite situation could be much better. Also if your child is low functioning like mine is,there arn`t a lot of options, unless you can afford to pay for private therapists to come to your home to work with your child.Have you checked out any bio-med therapies for autism?Check out the autism research institute. Also some bio-med autism groups on yahoo groups.

  3. I live in a small suburb of Philadelphia.  The average income is 86k annually.  A three bedroom home will rent between 1500 and 2000 per month.  A three bedroom home can be purchased for about 350k.  I am very satisfied with the services I receive for my son.  We do not use public services as private therapy exceeds what is available through our school system.  Our insurance pays for the majority of it . . .80%.  My son is high-functioning and has been diagnosed as hyperlexic.
