  1. Blacks in SD,  Trestles in south OC, HB Cliffs, Malibu

BTW, water is cold, bring your wetsuit.

  2. rincon      and the backside of the channel islands, and the ranch, in ventura, both access by boat only

  3. San Deigo and Tressels and San Onofre always have good waves

  4. Check out wannasurf.com it has surf spots from all over the world, and different info about access, best swell direction, experience level required for the break.  California is huge and there are hundreds of surf spots.  Different spots break better depending on the time of year.  In the winter Ventura is great with Rincon being the queen of the coast one of the worlds best waves when it is breaking.  In the summer it is best if there is a hurricane swell from the south.  San Diego gets pumping, but you should at least check out Huntington Beach and Malibu for the place they have in surfing history.  If you are going to the San Francisco Bay area check out Santa Cruz which also has a very rich surf history and some nice breaks also. Hope this helps.

  5. Check surfline.com for good information on just about all major spots along the west coast.  If coming to the So Cal region, I recommend Huntington Beach or Newport Beach.  If your skills are on the lower side, I'd recommend San Onofre beach (Old Mans) or even San Clemente pier.  There are tons of places to surf around here - you won't have much trouble finding one.  In general though, the swells hit better in the central cal region and in the san diego region.  I only surf so cal so that's all I know.
