Hello,

I'm looking for a tripod (ideally a kit) that is the best in its class in the $100-$500 range.

I know that can't buy me all the bells and whistles of a thousand plus system but I'm looking for something that combines portability, ease of use with a modicum of stability and balance (and if I'm not asking enough as it is I wouldn't mind a bit of fluidity). I know that's asking a lot but I figure it doesn't hurt to be specific.

In terms of use, I'm going to be doing seminars, weddings, maybe sports games, and other small productions (promotional videos).

I'm what you may call a tweener when it comes to videography. I have more experience and knowledge than the average consumer but not enough to qualify me as a expert or professional. I guess you could say that I'm a prosumer.

If anyone could point me to a good product or even a good website that provides ratings of tripods I would be forever greateful.

Thanks

Matt D

  1. Yikes! TiddiVis was right about B&H being the place to go, but he referred you to the still cameras tripods!

Looks like you're going for a Bogen/Manfrotto with this price range:

Don't let the myriad options confuse you - they all use the same couple of heads, which matter much more than the sticks.

In comparison to the 501, the 503 head has better friction control, 4 counterbalance settings instead of 1, and an illuminated levelling bubble (nice, but don't get hyped about it too much).

  2. go with a miller tripod with a fluid head.

    hope it helps!

  3. try this

fluid heads would be best (sold separately)
