I had it with sushi at a few sushi bars. It's pretty much a vegetable broth soup. There are no vegetables in it. There was one chive peice floating in it though.

I think It is broth cooked in vegetables till the vegetables are real mushy. I do beleive the vegtables are disposed of after cooking.

Anyone know what it is called?

  1. Is it  brownish?  If so, it's miso soup.  You can buy miso (fermented soybean paste) at most health food stores & larger grocery chains.  It ranges in color from a light beige to dark brown, depending on the type of grain used with the soy.

  2. Yummy Miso. I had it for the first time last Monday and it had white tofu squares in it.( I hate tofu). I go to an Asian pub(yes)  every Mon. and my friends would order it and I'd stick to my Goyoza(must try) . I  was avoiding it for the entire year and finally tried it and loved it.

  3. Its called Traditional Japanese Soup at our local Tepenyaki restaraunt and it is a chicken based broth. Sometimes it has fish broth as well.

  4. If you have had the soup at a sushi bar, I believe what you are referring to is called Miso Soup. It is made out of miso- which is either a red paste or a white paste and it made from fermented soy beans. It can be served with nothing in it, or with green onion and /or small cubes of tofu.

  5. Miso - you can buy instant or make a tasty stock and add red bean paste, soya, seaweed and tofu -

i think theres a recipe on cookeryclub

  6. Maybe Miso Soup. it's a staple in most japanese restaurants.

  7. Miso soup.  It usually has seaweed pieces in it and sometimes tofu.

  8. I think you were cheated

    I don't know Miso

every Asian restaurant I remember the soup had several vegetables even egg,,

  9. It was probably miso, most Japanese restaurants serve this with your entree.  If you want to make your own, there are several kinds of miso paste readily available, as well as a variety of instant kinds.  It is easy to make, add a spoonful of paste to hot water (the package should say what ratio paste to water), let it simmer until dissolved.  You can add veggies to it if you want, I like adding carrots, mushrooms, cubed soft tofu, green onions, and seaweed.  Most well stocked supermarkets these days will have miso and seaweed.  If you have an Asian grocery in your town, they should have a good selection of course.

  10. That is DEFINATELY Miso Soup.

You can also buy it in asian supermarkets in packets.

It is a soy or fish based soup and has bits of tofu in it.
