Question:

I'm looking into Himalyan rabbits, does anyone have resources?

I'm really nervous about getting any sort of new pet. I had a rabbit when I was young, but I hardly recall it- wasn't my responsibility so I don't know much about caring for rabbits.

I attended a local 4 H fair last year, and wished for a rabbit for a fair amount of time, but got busy with college and that sort of thing so setting aside money for a hutch and other amenities got put on the back burner.

The same local 4 H fair is being held this weekend (apparently, it's been exactly a year! Go figure.) and now I'm all wound up and want a little bunny again. I like the look of the Himalayan-- I've a Siamese cat, I've an affection for pointed markings-- but I admittedly don't know much about them.

Aside from asking questions tomorrow (the local rabbit breeders are very nice!), does anyone have any online resources I could read through?

I have two cats and three dogs as it is. The dogs are kept upstairs-- and my cats roam the house, although they prefer the downstairs for the most part. I want to keep the rabbit downstairs, but I worry about things like ventilation (cleaning the cage daily is obvious, but how bad will the smell be on the basement level?), and the size of the cage. Ideally, I'd love a free-range bunny-- but with wires, children, dogs and cats-- I think exercise time outside of the cage every day might work out better for now.

Anyway, any resources or advice? I don't have any specific questions-- I just don't know where to start! I love the animal, but they seem so delicate that I worry about how one will tolerate my very busy, very affectionate household. haha.

  1. go to the rabbit and cavy directory and click on the breed you would like to know about. here is the link:

  2. The American Rabbit Breeders Association has some good books out.

    ARBA books - http://www.arba.net/publications.htm

Also if you want a GREAT and cheap cage; I recommend building one from Neat Idea Cubes and putting it on a table so your other pet's don't get it.

Guides to building the GREAT and cheap cage:

Also buy Rabbits USA - I have it and it's a WONDERFUL recource.

If you're looking for some Himalayans try:

Hoobly.com (they have a himalayan section but no himalayans currently-might want to keep checking)

    kijiji.com

    domesticsale.com
