I don't know anything about NY or Manhattan and she knows zip about owning real estate. What areas are safe AND affordable for 150K or less?

In Manhattan?  Forget it.

I just did a search on Y! real estate.

$600,000 is the bottom for condos in Manhattan.

Now you can get something for $250,000 in Brooklyn or Jersey

well generally anywhere over 100th st is a bad neighborhood. and things that are a good price range, and safe areas, are downtown. Neighborhoods like the financial district, SoHo (south of houston st.), TriBeCa (triance below canal st).

i've lived in NYC all my life.

also, 150K isn't going to get you ANYTHING.

I suggest renting, it's a whole let better than buying.

Plus, if anything goes wrong, it's the super's job to fix it, not yours.
