I'm looking to buy a 2 - 3.5hp outboard for my canoe. Would 2 or 4 stroke be best for slow speed trolling?

Also what is the advantage to having a 4 stroke over a 2 stroke and vise versa. Thanks.

  1. All so in most states they are "doing away with 2 strokes" so a 4 stroke might be better in the long run. 4 stroke have more power in the low idle range they are quieter and are less of a  hassle to maintain, 2 strokes your power is in the higher RPM band and you have to mix the fuel. so if you can afford it I would say go with a 4 stroke.

  2. 4-strokes will idol down lower and since the fuel and oil do not mix, you spark plugs won't get over loaded with oil and start "spitten and sputterin". keep in mind... the 4-stroke engine only fires every 4th stroke of the engine BUT since you are going with such a small engine, power must not be important.... with that being said,  all the pros are with a 4-stroke in your situation.

  3. consider that your best option is going to be a battery operated trolling motor ... it is quiet and does not run off the fish .. it is cheaper to operate as compared to gasoline .. no noise no water pollution and light-weight for the  canoe .... look at the marine stores and walmart and places that sell related boat items -------- you will find that the cost of a gas engine is much higher than a trolling- electric-battery- operated-motor     .....

  4. if for a canoe I think you will be portageing or caring the canoe/motor alot. in this case a 4stroke is a poor option as they tend to leak oil if not carried in proper way. they can also leak oil into the cyl causing running probems. for your application the smaller lighter engine is the best choice and is a LOT cheaper and easier to operate. ps as little as that engine will use gas mixing is not a big issue.

  5. Four st. will idle down better and be a tad quieter. No fuel to mix...fewer emissions....bit heavier....probably overall a better choice.

2st is about 8 pounds lighter I think and a few hun cheaper.
