  1. Consider getting a smaller machine, unless you are already an experienced rider.  And if you are experienced, then make up your own mind.

    The Kawasaki 250 NInja, is pretty much the superior machine in the beginner/good-on-gas class.  It is more than sufficiently fast, and gets about 70 miles per gallon.
