  1. surfshops

  2. go to your local surf shop ask if they carry Channel Island or can order you one. I did that and was very pleased with the work Al did for me. Iwould suggest the flyer or the K-small

  3. Elle, are you from North Carolina. If so, there are a couple great shapers there.

I own three Allisons, one is a radical twin fin fish that was custom made. I even got a phone call from Will Allison with questions. My son-in-law has a custom Allison too, same thing, Great Board!

I have an Action (don't ride it much anymore, but that is just because I bought some new sticks) it is a great board. Mike Webb custom shapes them in Morehead City

I bought it second hand from a guy my size and age who had it custom made. again Great Board!

Heritage in Sea Isle City New Jersey has been shaping great east coast boards for 35 years.

I don't know the left coast all that well. I haven't surfed there in a few years, but I know that there are some great local shapers there, too. Also, some of your better, 'big name' companies will build you a nice custom board, Channel islands, Lost, Rusty, Harbour, to name a few. Thye all have on-line order forms, but I would still do business through a local shop/dealer. I don't know if you get the same degree of personal attention from them. I have been surfing since '66, and had dozens of boards, but two of my favorites were custom shaped for me. My 1970, 6'4" twin fin, and my crazy new 7'8" twin fin fish.  Good luck!

  4. Get a WRV.  They have been shaping boards specifically for east coast riding for over 40 yrs.  They have a shop right on the OBX in Kitty Hawk.

As a word of advice, it is ok to have some general dimensions in mind when going in to talk to a shaper but go through the process of discussing your riding style, local break, caliber/consistency of waves, and where you are looking to progress.  He is the expert.  Let him draw from his vast knowledge of boards and come up with something that will fit YOU.  Afterall, that's the point of getting a custom board.

  5. The best thing to do is talk to your local surf shop, they can help you most, especially with local shapers. The thing is, local shapers know the wave best and therefore more about building a board that will suit you perfectly.

If you're looking for something online, Webber surfboards shaped by Mark Webber are really good. They do custom as well as have off the rack boards available. My brother and I usually order about 10 boards a year from him. The process is really thourough, too. You fill out a legnthy form about your surfing and what kind of board you're looking for, and you either email or talk on the phone a couple times to make sure everything's set. And I've never been disapointed by one of their boards.
