  1. Local newsagent where they post ad for renting and in general are owners. But be preper to know that could be also and agent... they post there as well... also check with telling your friend that you are looking for a new place as sometimes help.. good luck

  2. As previous poster said main london paper and local papers also go to area you wish to live and look in local shops that have private adverts posted in windows or supermarkets etc - my friend in London found her flat this way - cannot remember which part of london it was as she has moved once again to get married this time but she just walked around the area and saw 3 adds placed in newsagents windows and also in a supermarket - the only other way is by word of mouth - if you know a few people ask them and also ask barmaids/barmen/staff at local bars/cafes in the area if they know of anything to rent

Stay away from agencies though as they charge you a lot in advance sometimes as high as 4 months rent - you usually have to sign a long contract and they also charge you their fee (high)  and this ends up being a very costly process !!

    Good luck !

  3. If you want to move in yourself the word to use is 'rent'. If you have a property you want to find tenants for, you want to 'let'. Look at the listings in the Evening Standard and also Time Out. If you do not have references then you will have to look at the notices in shop windows. You can put a notice in a shop window yourself - saying either you have a room to let, or you want to rent a room, for example.

  4. Local paper is best. For London it will be easier getting a share

place. Then you can look for your own.Not easy to get or cheap.
