  1. You might want to wait until Spring.  You are a little too late to start one this time of year.

As a starter, you can plant all the things you mentioned above.  They are easy to care for and don't require a whole lot of space.  Be sure to stake your tomatoes to maximize your space even more.  They tend to spread all over the place if no staked.

Other than that, provide your plants with plenty of water and you should be on your way.

    Good Luck!

  2. I can tell you this about tomatoes - I planted a small tomato plant as instructed, almost burying the whole plant (bury 3/4ths of it).  I can't believe how big it has gotten.  It got so large we had to cut part of it back so we could get past it to the trash cans.  We probably had to trim off 50 or 100 green tomatoes.

  3. How are you planting (container, ground, raised beds)? This year I did raised beds, and have found it easier and less weed pulling. Plus I seemed to have gotten more vegetables. I think that is the way to go. Good soil and consistent watering seems to be the key to healthy plants. You can test your soil, you can buy a tester at Home Depot for about $11 or so. It will also tell you what your ground needs for planting. This is the best way to start, so you know what your ground needs instead of trying to guess by what your plants are doing. Then plant, starts from the nursery are the easiest when your a newbie. Add mulch to the topsoil and water. There is really a lot more to know, you will learn as they grow. There is a REALLY good gardening book, I think its called The Vegetable Gardeners Bible. I would really recommend getting it, I was impressed by the simplicity of it.

There is nothing like growing a garden you will really get alot from it, mentally and physically. The best of luck!!!

My favorite and easy to grow is zucchini squash and green beans.
