  1. Do not put anything on the quilt that the baby can pull off and swallow. That means no buttons, no tassels, no googly eyes, no beads. Use natural fiber batting (cotton, wool, silk, bamboo) that has not been treated with chemicals. Even better, use Quilter's Dream Angel batting, which is not treated with chemical and is fire retardant.

Cotton is the fabric traditionally used for quilting, and it's a good choice (although not the only choice). There's a huge variety of fabrics and it's easy to work with. You can also use cotton flannel for a softer texture. Don't rule out other fabrics, though. Textures may appeal to the baby, so think about fabrics like chenille and Minkee, an unbelievably soft plush fabric. It's a bit more difficult to work with, but it can make a nice addition or backing.

  2. cotton cotton cotton.  Always use 100% cotton.  Organic cotton would be the very best, but - Its your quilt.

Just make it flat, and stitched firm.  Don't sew on anything that they can pull off and stick in their mouth! :)

  3. As long as you don't have string or tassels hanging off it will be fine. Make sure it is solid and baby can't get fingers in it or anything.

  4. Realistically the baby can't sleep with a quilt until age 1 because of SIDS.  So you might consider making one to hang on the wall instead.

Cotton or wool burn slower than synthetics.  Also some forms of wool are flame retardant and mildew resistent.
