  1. If you are moving here with out a job, you may be in a lot of trouble. This town is in recession. I live here! Good Luck!

  2. I've lived here in Las Vegas for a little over two years.  I don't know everything about the city but I still know quite a bit.

Where you live and what jobs you do depend on a lot of things of course.  What are your skills, training and education?  Vegas is a big town that has just about everything.  Some of the "hot" jobs here are casino work, landscaping, construction (yes businesses and families are still building despite all the gloom and doom you see in the press), road repair, security, shuttle/taxi/bus driving, teaching (the schools are always growing and needing teachers), retail (hundreds of shops here), culinary (hundreds of restaurants of all kinds too), etc.

The Las Vegas metro is broken up into barely distinguishable towns and suburbs that blend into each other but are a bit distinct once you get away from the edges.  They include Midtown (where I live and is just east of The Strip), North Las Vegas (which some people consider the "bad"side of town though it's no where near as bad as the ghettos of New York, LA or Chicago, The Strip (where the fanciest casinos are), Freemont Street (where the oldest remaining casinos are and is kind of in North Las Vegas), Henderson (which considers itself a separate town but it's blended into Midtown.  It's a bit fancier with newer houses), Eastside ( over by Nellis AFB, a little older than Henderson but parts of it are new), then you have the huge housing developments that call themselves towns but are not really yet lilke Summerlin, Alliente, Red Rock and Black Mountain.  Vegas has everything from new developments of "mcmansions" to old neighborhoods of your basic small house that have been here for over 50 years.

I prefer to be in Midtown because the rent is reasonable for me (about $600/month for a single bedroom apartment), it's close to everything and it's a little nicer looking than some of North Las Vegas.  My wife works for the Clark County School District which is the largest employer in the county.  I do contract work for a temp agency and a little computer work on the side based out of my home.  I used to work for some of the retail stores in town, but got tired of standing all day and dealing with customers, most of whom treated you like dirt.  There were some nice ones, but I got sick of dealing with returns, complaints about prices etc.  It's also didn't pay very well compared to the time it took up out of my day.  Now, I work fewer hours and get paid more per hour than I ever did working retail.  I'm kinda my own boss too as I can accept or decline a contract from the temp agency and I do as much business with computer repair as I want to.  I can take time off just about whenever I want.  I'm not getting rich this way by any means, but the other benefits outweigh the money.  I'll take my sanity over a steady paycheck any day.

  3. Hopefully you have a job confirmed already because the unemployment is very high.  Casinos are hardly hiring and businesses are closing all over the place.

You do not want to live in the zip cod of 89109, a high crime area.

You need a car to survive.  Check www.lasvegasnow.com for more info
