Question:

I'm moving from NY to WI, what is the best and cheapest way to get my stuff and me there?

i am moving in April and i need to know the best and cheapest way to haul stuff out to WI, i have to move:

a mattress, full size,

a dog, large lab, (I have a foldable cage for her)

clothing for 2 people.

other than that i can sell everything else i have, we also have to get our car out there too, it's a Saturn, very small.

i don't drive, so we have only one driver, my husband.

i thought about somehow tying the mattress to the roof of the car, putting the dog in the back seat, and packing all our clothing in the trunk, does anyone know if a full size mattress would fit on top of a small car? (it has a sunroof too)

i also looked into u-haul, they wanted about $1,800 for renting a 12' truck for the trip, without gas, Penske wanted about $750 for the trip, without gas.

does anyone know of cheaper ways to haul stuff, or a cheap way to haul a car?

thanks for reading!

  1. Definitely don't tie the mattress to the car- it will likely come loose at interstate speeds and pose a hazard to traffic.

You could look into the option of renting a full size van or pickup truck from a regular rental car company.  I know Enterprise has pickup trucks.  There would be more room for your stuff, and to securely tie the mattress down using the bed and roof of the pickup, or you may be able to squeeze it in a full sized van.

You can also hire driving services, through U-Haul, to drive your car for you (or to drive the pickup, whichever your husband prefers).

There's also PODS (Portable On Demand Storage)....they drop the PODS container off, you load it, they put it on a truck and deliver it to your destination.  You unpack it, they come pick up the empty PODS container.  You drive your car, just the 3 of you and an overnight bag :).  I have no idea what it costs, but they have a website: www.PODS.com

  2. i live in wisconsin, you'll love it. if you dont mind the cold once in awhile. i wouldnt risk it with tieing the stuff up and hauling it out yourself, but if you cant afford a uhaul or anything i guess it would work. take the measurements and check if the mattress would fit.. and also if you have the money it'd be worth it to just rent the moving truck.

  3. uhaul is the way....or penske, either one,...do a "one way" .......You're going to pay either way, .and doing it yourself is the cheapest way, no matter how you look at it.

  4. Ahh.it is good you are getting away from NY it sucks there. And WI is a lot safer than the cess pool that is NY! by the way a penske truck is a pretty good price. You can just get a hitch and attach your car to the truck. Being the fact that you don't drive is going to cost you more money as well. You may have to get a hotel room when your husband gets tired-but if you drove you two could just take turns.

  5. First ? is why are you moving to WI? Very dangerous there and smelly.

  6. If that is all you are going to take, save some money and sell the mattress.  Everything else will fit in the car.  You can buy decent mattresses for not too bad of prices now-a-days.

You cannot tie your mattress to your roof.  It will not stay at interstate speeds. And it will get wet and filthy.

  7. put all your belongings in a thick waterproof bag,

    throw it out to sea,

hope that the whole f**kings thing eventually gets to you...

  8. Pack one suitcase, the driver and the dog, and U haul @$$.

  9. You can also try having your things shipped--it seems that the bed is the only thing you'll have trouble taking yourself.  You can try this site:

    http://www.uship.com/

There are other shipping companies out there as well.

  10. you can book online ticket for flight and book extra cargo...make online booking through http://www.cheapflightstomumbai.com

  11. sounds like you should sell the mattress too and just move in the saturn.  Pull a small enclosed trailer from U-haul behind the car.

  12. Why not also sell the mattress too?  Instead of renting a truck, it would be cheaper to rent a trailer from U-Haul or another rental company.  Then use your car to haul the trailer to WI.

If you really have that little to move, you may get away with a roof cargo carrier instead of the trailer.

    good luck.
