any advice you have, whether its on how to deal with roommates or how to get used to communal washrooms, would be greatly appreciated!

I'm an only child and I think I've become too reliant on living with my parents so I need all the advice I can get :)

  1. this is not an unfair question I have for you are you a girl or a guy

  2. its not that bad, just beg your roommates are not crazy

  3. No advice, only condolences.  I loathed dorm life!  Smelly, noisy, lacking privacy, too much drama.

  4. Definately decorate your room!  If you don't, it tends to look more like a prison cell.  It might save you a few bucks not to, but you'll hate it by the end of the first semester.

When it comes to your roommate, just be considerate of their things and personal space (as much as anyone could have in a dorm).  If they're doing something that bothers you, talk to them about it instead of bottling it up or going off on them.  It'll make your school year MUCH more enjoyable.  I'm an only child as well, and all of a sudden being thrown into a room with someone I didn't know was a bit awkward.  Talk to them, get to know them.  Even if you don't end up best friends, at least you will be on good terms.  Also, don't be a slob.  Being a bit disorganized is fine, but don't leave dirty laundry on the floor for weeks at a time.  Not only is it just gross, but your roommate will think less of you.

Don't leave your things in the shower.  If you have lockers, lock them up, if not, keep them in your room.  On good days, people will just use your shampoo, on bad days, eveything you own will be missing.  Remember: college kids are poor :)

Make friends with your RA if you can.  Even if you don't really like them, being on good terms with them as well might save you a headache later.  Like if they find beer in your fridge and you're only 18.  Instead of just reporting you, they might be more inclined to just give you a warning instead.  They'll also be a good source of information on classes, professors, pretty much anything that has to do with college life.
