And how does this effect me? It it a transfer to their system, or an I considered totally new to them, and have to declare previous conditions. Can they turn me down? Any help would be great!

  1. In addition to raised rates, you're also going to find higher out of pocket expenses if you do seek care. AND, you might only be covered for emergency care with your current plan. (I have BCBS of NY and if I go out of state for any reason, I'm only covered for emergency care, and no prescription coverage.) You can't just make a lateral change, you have to apply from fresh, and if you're just an individual, you're going to pay out the wazoo.

If your employer offers the insurance and you're being transferred by them, they need to change you to a plan offered in New York - like Aetna or United Healthcare.

Otherwise, find an independent agent who will shop deals for you. (If you're getting homeowners/renters' insurance and/or car insurance thru them, they'll be more vested to find you the best deal they can.)

  2. You could keep you BCBS of Illinois, but once they find out your permanent address is out of state they will raise your rates.

Unfortunately BCBS of Illinois is a different company from BC/SH NY (they are all held by BCBS but are all separate companies) so you would have to apply for coverage and go through underwriting and yes they can turn you down.
