  1. That would be me that mentioned that. If a dive shop doesn't know you, they'll want to see proof of diver training before they fill your tank, which is that handy C card you'll earn after taking   an Open Water scuba course. The dive shop doesn't want to be held liable for you hurting yourself or worse. If you've taken the training, the liability is on you...not them if they've followed proper procedures. An Open water certification usually costs anywhere between 250- 350 bucks. It varies with location. In most cases, they'll want you to have your own mask, fins and snorkel BEFORE you start the course. The rest of the gear you'll need on course is usually supplied for your use until you're certified. Read the fine print though. Some shops may charge an "equipment fee" on top of the class fees.

Once you're a certified Open water diver, you'll be able to get your tanks filled with air, rent tanks and rent regulators. You'll also have the skills to conduct a dive, with a buddy, using normal air, to a depth of 60 feet in a non overhead environment ( no penetrating wrecks or caves). You will also be allowed to dive off dive charter boats that are going to an area appropriate for your skill level.
