Some say that wearing glasses and focusing at near objects like a computer screen will make you more nearsighted. My screen is 3 feet away, where letters start getting blurry, i'm considering wearing glasses for computer use and placing my screen 5 or 6 feet away, what you think?

  1. Some say is the key statement here. Nothing is really certain in that regard. I personally do not believe that looking up close with glasses (especially with such a low number when so little light is focused) can harm your vision. Either way, 3 feet is quite far (in my country distance is measured in meters, and if i'm not mistaken that's 1 meter) so you can even move the screen a little closer if the blur really bothers you and if you're afraid to view the screen up close with glasses.

  2. I have used a computer for over 15 years and am short sighted like yourself.  Using a computer does not make the condition worse only bad practise.  Make sure that your monitor is correctly positioned, that it is an arms length from you , raised to a position so that you are not looking up or down and ensure that there is no glare on the screen.  Also make sure that you have an eye sight test every two years and ask the optician if your computer use is affecting your eye sight.

  3. I'm horribly nearsighted myself and the only way I can use a computer is when I'm wearing glasses. Otherwise, I have to sit so that my face is only about eight inches away from the screen. I can't see it clearly any farther away from that.

  4. I don't think you should need to.

I have very strange vision - one eye -1.50, the other -3 (which is bad). Most of the time I don't need glasses/contacts to use the computer, I just sit a bit closer.

  5. You have a low prescription for nearsightedness so you should be able to use the computer without corrective lenses.     You should also be ok if you choose to wear your glasses as well because your prescription is really low.

Three feet (36 inches) seems to be too far away from the monitor.  Most literature I have read regarding monitor viewing distance suggests being between 18 to 26 inches away from the monitor.  If you are comfortable using the computer from those distances, then do what is comfortable for you.

This question made me curious about my monitor distance.  I am using a laptop computer (currently on my lap) with a 17 inch widescreen display and my eyes are about 22 inches away from it.  I only have a prescription in my left eye.  PL -1.50 X50 and the text starts getting blurry in my left eye around 28 inches.  My right eye that has normal vision could see it at 36 inches, but it was not comfortable at all.  I am not wearing my glasses or contact lens right now.  It does not bother me to use them on the computer, but they are not actually needed.
