  1. Genealogy, not pianos , but here is a list of piano makers starting with 'C'

(doesn't seem to be any 'C.A's)

    C. Burlman & Co.

Cable and Sons (New York, 1852)

    Challen (1804)

    Chappell Pianos (London, 1811)

    Charles R. Walter (Elkhart, Indiana)

Chas. S. Norris (Boston, Circa 1930)

    Chickering and Sons (Boston, 1823)

    Cunningham Piano Company (Philadelphia, 1891)

    Currier Piano Co. (Marion, N. C., 1969)

    Clementi

  2. Not C.A., but could you mean Chickering & Sons?  They made a lot of uprights.

  3. A long shot but I found this from the link below.

    SMITH & BARNES

Known as "the Pioneer pianos of the West." The first pianos manufactured in Chicago for wholesale trade. This was in 1884. The manufacture of these instruments is conducted tinder a strong organization headed by The Continental Piano Co. The Smith & Barnes player-pianos are of the same high character and have earned for themselves a place among the leading player-pianos of the country. The Smith, Barnes & Strobber Company, manufacturers of the Smith & Barnes pianos, stand among the highest commercially in the piano manufacturing industry. Main office and factory at Chicago. Very large branch factory at No. Milwaukee, Wis. See also Smith, Barnes & Strobber Co

About the company that made this piano: C.A. Smith established his Chicago piano factory (under his own name) in Chicago, Illinois in 1884. By 1891, he had incorporated, and the company became known as Smith & Barnes. This company was the first to supply pianos for the general wholesale trade. (Before this general wholesaling was done, pianos had been sold in factory warerooms and by mail order.) In 1906, another incorporation with the Strohber Piano Company took place, and the company name was changed again to Smith, Barnes & Strohber. Although the American piano industry began in Boston and New York during the early 19th century, by the end of the first decade of the 20th century more pianos were being produced "Out West" in Chicago than anywhere else in the world. Smith & Barnes was one of the major piano producers in the Chicago area, that is attributed to establishing Chicago as "the greatest piano market in the world." In 1910, C.A. Smith was president of the American Association of Piano Manufacturers. Like many other piano makers, because sales took dramatic drop between 1910 and 1930, Smith & Barnes would go out of business in 1921. This period of decline is known as the end of "The Golden Age of the American Piano."
