Question:

I'm nervous about high school

I'm really nervous about going into an entirely new school. I'm not the kind that usually introduces himself to to others - don't get me wrong, I'm very social, I've just never tried introducing myself. I usually let people find me and hope it goes well, it's worked for the last 9 years of school (I'm going into 9th grade, obviously). I'm also nervous about lunch and finding a table to sit at, seeing how the seniors, juniors, and sophomores will all know right where to go as soon as I walk in, I'll be completely and totally lost. So with all this said... I AM a very social person, I don't do any sports exactly, but I do Parkour and I breakdance, both of those are very uncommon and I wont be able to break the ice using those, so all in all, I'm extremely nervous about finding friends.

  1. Every student that is about to enter high school feels the same way that you feel. Just calm down and every thing will work out. Just be your self.

  2. just relax. everybody gets nervous.

  3. ur not alone im starting high school too at a new school and people have told me that i shouldnt get nervous just to go up to someone and offer a simple hi. you"ll be surprised to find out that u'll have someone to sit next to at lunch try talking to someone before lunch.... im really shy so its gonna hard but u should really try introducing urself...thats what im gonna do lol well good luck!...to us both lol

  4. Look around at others who are new. They feel like you do. Get together with them. Focus on helping others to be comfortable. You will be fine. Keep you sense of humor. Don't try to act like you know it all. What worked for 9 years will still work.

Try to go a few days early to look around so that you will know where things are. Then you will be more comfortable and not have to ask a lot of dumb questions or end up somewhere you don't want to go or lost. I asked someone where the restroom was and as a joke they sent me into the teachers' lounge.

Memorize the schedule and a map if you can and wear a watch. You will be more confident and look like you know what you are doing.

Try to join in an activity where all grade levels help each other. If not sports, some other club or group activity. If you don't mind the haircut, JROTC is a great way to become a part of a group quickly; upperclassmen look after the freshmen in their group.

Maybe there is a breakdance club. If not, ask about starting one or something similar like a jazz dance club.  Maybe the band uses dancers at football games.  And cheerleaders can be males or females and get to be a part of sports events.  If you are a guy, it could be just you with a lot of good-looking girls on the cheerleading squad.

If nobody else does Parkour, start a group. Maybe the track coach can help. Or maybe you can just join the track team?

Get involved in clubs, activities that the school offers. There you find friends and can then hang with them for other things also. All those activities will also look good when you apply to college or for a job after high school.

  5. You shouldnt be nervous. Its best if you just try to relax. Try saying hi and being nice. As time goes on you get to know the people around you a little bit better.

  6. I started high school last year and i was as nervous as you were. i was the only one from my grade school going to this new high school, so it was really nerve racking. But once i started school most of the people spoke to me first, some people started being nice to me and that'ss how we became friends. But there was some sophomores who couldnt stand freshman but you'll get along real well with freshman.
