Hey there, so I'm going to start leasing a horse soon, he is at a different barn, and I've been riding at hte same barn basically my whole life, I'm nervous about moving barns, and meeting new people, and riding a new horse, any advice? I'm just leasing for pleasure, I wouldn't be showing or anything. Or not at htis time, so any advice would be great, I'm a very shy person, and it took me so long to get comfortable at my current barn but, I don't know, just any advice would be great.

  1. I think that you'll be fine! Horse people are usually very social so you should feel included in no time!

Also, you should just try to say hi to everybody and put yourself out there!

  2. Moving barns is always tough! Ask the barn manager or the person you're leasing from if they can introduce you to some of the other riders. They may be able to point out people who have similar interests as you. and don't feel too shy about introducing yourself. If you see someone grooming or tacking up, ask them about themselves and their horse. Horse people always love to tell others about their horses. I'm sure you'll make friends quickly. Good luck!

  3. I lease, and to be honest I don't even think about the horse not really being mine. They always say something with ''MY HORSE'' in it...they are totally nice about it and I think they like that I lease it because they have a lot of horses to train and If I have one of theirs thats on less they have to ride all the time...of course I show so they still give me my undivided attention...this is the best thing I have ever done in my life...I am very shy also but I get use to the people and now I have been with them for 8 years and I would defiantly count them as family! I love them to death! I am sure everything will be fine and you will have the best time ever!

Good Luck and Hope I could help!

  4. Moving barns is a hard thing, I've had to do it, but thankfully it was a slow transition yet bad situation. My old instructor was very mean to me, yelling at me about things that weren't my fault. I was at a show one time showing in reining, he excells at this event. Anyway, I forgot a flying lead change. He screamed at me ripping me up oneside and down the other for that. My mare was acting up because she was in heat, and he blamed me for it and said my spurs caused it. I had slowly started to move barns, one that would be more show oriented. After a couple more arguements I moved all my stuff out. It was hard because there were different rules, different types of people. But we were all passionate about showing. People heard about what happened and came up to me and helped me out with things.

for you don't worry about leasing, it'll be fine. The more horses you ride the better rider you become, thats a fact. Also the more variety instructors you have the better rider you'll become. Its helps you figure out your style of learning. One great thing that horse people have in common? We all can start randomly talking about horses and funny riding stories. Just be yourself and you'll meet people in no time

  5. Just don't forget that you're doing this to HAVE FUN! Smile and say hello to people and they will have no reason to have ill thoughts of you. You are bound to find friends or nice people when you're nice to them. Good luck and have fun!
