Question:

I'm not into board games....Am I a bad person?

My friends and I get together occasionally, and they seem compelled to pull out a board game. Monopoly and Life I can live with, but they wanna play risk, axis and allies, magic cards, and lots of other games that are complicated and boring. I really tried to give them a chance, but I think they are boring. My friends think I am not challenging myself mentally, but I just really want to have fun during the weekend. Does that make me an idiot, or what???

  1. No, everybody likes different things. If somone calls you an idiot for not liking something "that is actoually quite lame", then they are stupid because everybody likes different things.

  5. Well I don't think idiot is an appropriate word to describe you. You are just more of an adventurous person than your friends. Don't try to be someone you're not. And don't let them turn you into a boring person. Try suggesting other ideas besides a board game.

  6. I agree.  I consider myself an intelligent person and have always been "above average" when it comes to school, but I really don't enjoy strategy games or games that take hours / days to play.  I think you really just have to be a certain type of person to enjoy games like that.

    I'm all about laser tag though.  And Skeebal (sp)l!

  10. Although you do not like board games, that doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. Individuality is what make us ourselves, and even with the fact of your friends having different interests, you still can have fun with them. Mix in a few of your interests with the board games, or try help them find another activity that they will enjoy as much as you. It's all about flexibility.

  12. Magic the Gathering isn't bad, but look for some different board games as well, like Ticket to Ride, Sequence, or maybe Trivial Pursuit, Sports edition.  Think of something you're interest, as it could also be a board game.  So no, you're not a horrible person.

Dude, it sounds like your friends are the lame ones.  Who plays games and worries about challenging your intellect?  Sounds like some people I used to pick on when I was a kid.  Just kidding.  But seriously, I suggest finding some friends who like to do the same things you do.  There is nothing wrong with just "hanging out".  I never played board games with my friends. They are so boring.  We played basketball or football outside, yeah, even when it was cold out.  Video games will fry your brain so do something active or go to a movie or something.  Trust me, girls aren't down with guys who play board games so you're on the right track.

  21. :) no. i personally love games like that (my avatar background is a bunch of people in my living playing board games) so i guess i kinda geek out sometimes.

    sometimes i wonder if it's 'bad' that i'm not very outdoorsy. i hate bees and i burn easily, plus i'm afraid of bears so nature walks are kind of out. i guess i enjoy them when someone manages to drag me out, but i never plan them myself.

    like i said, everyone's different--it's cool that you gave those games a try--i think that's proof that you've 'challenged' yourself. you tried something new, and that's all you can do -- you can't force yourself to like something.

    you could always suggest something that you like and see if your friends want to try it -- like bowling or hiking or going to a movie ... whatever floats your boat.

  22. Dude you are not living until you've spent all night making a deck for Magic the Gathering, built the biggest cold war army for Axis and Allies and taken all comers at Risk.  You are just not a gamer and that is all there is to it.  Move on and find people who like what you like.  

    Me I'm a gamer, so I like doing all of those things, but it gives most people a headache.  I do that stuff to have fun, if ain't fun during fun time then quit and do something else.

  26. No, it's like some people don't like game consoles, it doesn't mean they just don't know how to handle a games controller, you're fine, you just don't like them. I don't really like them either, they were fun when I was a kid, but after I hit my teenage years I find more fun socialising with people and going out to have fun. But some people like board games, alot of people move from immature ones like Guess Who to ones like Chess and Backgammon, but some just prefer to go out. I do occasionally play a game of Chess if I am THAT bored but if I can go out then what the heck right? You're not an idiot, you are fine, everyone is different, and so what if you're friends want to play board games, then you should just go out with friends that won't!! And if you haven't got any then make some! hehe have fun!!

  31. haha...i absolutely hate board games too....it doesn't mean you're an idiot...you probably like to go out more an be sociable...I dont know...people who like board games are weird because they just like sitting around all day...if they say that you're not challenging yourself mentally, the you can tell them that they're lazy and anti-social....haha...well maybe not that far...haha
