I know about how to play the game, some, but I'm not sure about how many players, how they get paid from sponsers, how the teams are picked, ect.

Can anyone explain some of this to me. I want to watch the games this years with my husband and sons, and I don't want to ask too many questions while their watching. Thanks

  1. you cant really learn football by reading, im a huge ootball fan and ive followed football for quite a while and still almost every week i learn something new. my suggestion for you should be just to watch the games and follow the offseason (arguably the most complicated part of the nfl) good luck with that ;)

  2. You are a good wife !!!!!

  3. Watching the game is a good way to find out. There are some good books out there that explain it. When i was about 12 (now 32) i thought football was boring till dad took me to my first football game. i just learned by asking questions (NOT when the game is on) and watching the game. Soon enough you Will get a hang of it. as for picking the teams:

The Draft which takes place at New Yorks Madison Square Garden in April - is the annual selection process where all 32 NFL teams grab the best players coming out of the college football ranks.

In order to level the playing field each season, the team with the worst record from the previous year picks first, thus ensuring them the best shot at the top player in the Draft. The reigning Super Bowl champion picks last and all the teams selecting in between are determined by their record the previous season.

After all 32 teams have selected players, the worst team picks again to begin the second round. There are seven rounds in the Draft and teams are allowed to trade players or picks in order to change their position in the selection process, making for a busy and hectic day of wheeling and dealing for those responsible for putting together the rosters for each team.

You are not going to learn a ton about football from books, but at the same time you can learn rules, team history and whatnot.

  4. I agree with Packerfan, you aren't going to learn it well from a book. Here is my advice.

    1. Read the wiki page, take a few notes.

2a. Pick a pre-season game to watch, and ask your husband/son/both to watch the game with you and explain things. I don't think they would mind explaining how football is played while watching a pre season game. Remember, men usually JUMP at the chance to talk football.

    http://www.nfl.com/schedules?seasonType=...

Above is a link to the NFL Pre Season schedule. Interesting games should be: 7pm (EST) 8/23 Giants at Jets | 8pm (EST) 8/23 Steelers at Vikings | Monday night games

2b. If you really think your husband/son won't want to explain while watching, or you want to surprise them, go this route:

Pick a pre season game to watch like above.

Find a sports bar that you like.

Go watch the game and find a not too seedy appearing gentleman who looks to be watching the game, and ask him if he wouldn't mind explaining the game to you. Remember, most guys will JUMP at the chance to talk football. Don't forget your notes.
