I'm not used to not being perfect right away(Lifeguard training)?

Okay I am doing a class where they prepare you for the lifeguard lessons.

I am doing okay i suppose and i'm trying very hard to lighten up on myself but I need some pointers on swimming.

I am having a difficulty with the breast stroke? I can do the kicking(poorly mind you) or the arm movements separately but not together. I frequently pause and I try to center myself and think about what I need to change. I do it right for a few strokes and then I s***w up.

Is it best to pause and adjust or just keep going?

I don't want to make a habit of doing the wrong thing and that is why I stop.

Any tips on how to better coordinate my movements?

  1. If you have a legal breastroke kick, then concentrate on getting a good streamline glide off each kick with your head down - eyes looking at the bottom of the pool.  Minimize your pull.  Just separate your hands and press enough to lift your head to breathe.  Off your breath, just dive forward with your kick again.

  2. The kick and arm movement should be seperate..

As you kick, your arms should be infront of you, in a 'sort-of' streamline position, and as you lose momentum from the kick, you begin your stroke.

  3. first kick then pull make sure ur arms are straight when you kick. kick wide and under water, n take small strokes but long kicks. glide a lot.

keep this in mind and practice and u'll do fine.

  4. well this is how i was taught...

well you said that you can do the arm movements and leg movements seperately right? well thats sorta how i was taught to do it. first my arms and then my legs really. then arms then legs. you just have to get the rhythm down.

let me try to explain a bit better.

so you start your arms out in front of you like a streamline. Then you bring your arms out to like a scarecrow. like the arms are kind of dangling you know? then you bring your arms/hands together. Then, as your arms going out into a stream line again, you kick. and you do the same thing over and over.

and you breathe every time you bring your arms together, i think. sorry im used to just doing it without thinking. haha. anyways, good luck!
