I didn't know they did things like that.  What happened to the money you raised as a class while you were  in school.  Isn't that what is suppose to pay for such events?

We are hoping that you will be able to donate ______ or items of your choosing. We will use these items for a silent auction during the night of the event to raise funds to cover the costs of the weekend’s events.  Any remaining funds will be donated to the xxxxx Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Sell ads to the booklet you are preparing for your class.  Get quotes from everyone you can.  Also, you should list any deaths in the last 10 years.  Good luck.

Just use normal letter format - there is no need for it to be formal...
