Has anyone done anything similar recently, and have any suggestions? I am trying to do this on a budget (ie. as cheaply as possible, without having to stay in a barn). Cheers!

  1. book now for ryanair flights to mainland spain close to balearics then ferry over to islands and find hostels as you go maybe..ill be in calla millor from sat 9th to 16th on majorca with my girlfriend......seems to me you will be travelling most of the time with only eight days..i would save the islands for another time or madrid  and relax a little more

  2. Internal flights in Spain are expensive

  3. I don't think that you can do this cheaply.

If you don't use flights, you are going to lose a day travelling by train.

The cheapest hotel room is about €50 a night.

You would perhaps be better doing a couple of city breaks from England.

I'm sorry but I have never gone cheaper than €50 and I'm not going to start.

  4. June is not high season yet. Balearic Islands and Madrid is a lot to visit in only 8 days, as you have lots of nice places in Madrid (not only museums, night life, old town, but also lovely suroundings) and the same in Mallorca. This is a top 10 of places in Mallorca alone (I have changed a couple of the list on the iternet, I spend there 15 days last summer):

       1. Spend a day in Palma exploring the old city, then join the evening passeig along the waterfront for a drink in one of the island's trendiest bars.

       2. Take the joyride to Soller on a vintage electric train through the mountains and then go to Deia, a posh and rich place in a hippy style.

       3. Enjoy a boat trip around the coast, passing hidden coves which you cannot reach in a car.

       4. Walk in the Serra de Tramuntana, breathing in the heady mix of fresh air, sea breeze and scented wild herbs.

       5. Sit at a quayside restaurant eating fresh fish - choose from any one of the island's ports.

       6. Visit the monastery at Valldemossa, where Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838-9. REALLY WORTH IT!!!

       7. Go to Cap Formentor... you can't miss it, only if you suffer from vertigo!

       8. Go to Es Trenc, wonderful beach!!!

       9. Find out where there is a local festival going on - and drop everything to get there.

      10. Go to lovely calas

I HAVE THE TOP 10 IN MADRID ALSO

Top 10 Attractions and Sites of Madrid

If you were only going to see 10 sites in Madrid, then these would be my recommendations:

    1. The Prado Museum - Metro Banco de España

    2. Puerta del Sol - Metro Sol

    3. Plaza Mayor - Metro Sol

    4. Retiro Park - Metro Retiro

    5. Royal Palace - Metro Ópera

    6. Calle Gran Vía - Metro Gran Vía, Plaza de España, Callao and Banco de España

    7. Reina Sofía Museum - Metro Banco de España

    8. Thyssen Museum - Metro Banco de España

    9. Fountains of Cibeles and Jupiter - Metro Banco de España and Colon

    10. Puerta de Alcalá - Metro Retiro

I am from Madrid myself and I agree. These are really good and they are in the very centre. Do not miss the night life in the centre too!!! Huertas, Plaza de Santa Barbara, Latina, Cava Baja are the best places to go out, although Paseo de la Castellana has lovely terrazas at this time of the year where the "gente guapa" (beautiful people) spend the nights. Good luck.

  5. I have to agree with other posters Madrid and the Balearic's in 8 days is a lot.  However if you really want to then I would suggest booking your flight into one destination and out of another.

You can then get a cheap connecting flight between the two (it is possible to do that for under 50€).  Only book your first night in each place and then have a wander round and book into a pension.  The nicest place I stayed in in Madrid was under £10 and we found that by going in places and asking.  It was a family home but it was spotless and the staff were lovely.

You don't say which of the islands you want to stay on but for 8 days I would only pick one.  Obviously Mallorca has Palma and the mountains and the culture.  Menorca is quieter but also very beautiful.  Ibiza is the renowned party Island although there is more to it than that and formentera (the only island you cant fly to) is very small and lovely - although you can explore it in a day.

I would base your decision on what you are wanting out of your holiday and don't try to fit in too much or it will become tiresome and wont be fun.

Hope you have a good time

  6. I think June is too hot to go to Madrid. So I'd only stick with Balearic Islands (at least you have the sea close).

Try Madrid before May or after September.
