  1. No.  Although one half of the island is occupied by the Dutch, and the other half French, they accept U.S. currency.  I would suggest taking a tour of the entire island.  Marigot (the French side) has excellent shopping.  However, you have to pay to use some of the restrooms (but at least they're clean!)  After you get off of the ship, there are several shopping malls at port.  However, most of them are tourist traps and souvenir items.  After a long day of shopping, a few other tourist attractions include Maho Beach.  This is the only international airport on the planet that lets you get this close to major airline jets.  There is also an attraction called the "Boo Boo Jam" which is great if you are a beach lover and want to just relax and enjoy the ocean.  You will certainly have a wonderful time in St. Maarten.  There is a lot to do and the overall experience is indeed serene.

  2. No, they will happily accept $, in preference to the local currency. Ask for the price in dollars and haggle. If you are a bargain hunter you will have great fun.

  3. No you do not need to exchange your money. They have to take your money because you are traveling with a cruise line. Bon Voyage, and have fun!

  4. Use your credit card. That is the easiest way to shop and if there is a problem the credit card co. will protect you. All reputable shops in the islands accept credit cards.

  5. simple answer is no. I have been on 7 cruises, and I have not needed to exchange any of my money ever for any port of call.

The shopping in St Maarten is fantastic too by the way, but if you're going to St. Thomas as well I suggest saving your money for there, they have the best jewelry and watch shops and I have always gotten the best deals there.

I would also suggest doing an excursion on St. Maarten as well, they have the best options. I went on the "tree-top excursion" and it was amazing.

I know that was a lot more than you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

  6. No you won't need to exchange your money, the dollar is accepted at most Caribbean ports. St Martin has great shopping and its cheaper than St. Thomas.
