  1. Arenal Volcano is a must see:

Liberia Airport is the best airport to fly into for the beaches of Guanacaste/ only 35 mins drive away:

  2. Most people fly into San Jose international.  From there I recommend getting out of the city as fast as possible.  Playa Manuel Antonio is well known and pretty touristy, but if swimming in calm warm waters wathcing the monekys in the trees is on your agenda, go.  It is located on the Pacific Coast, a little more than midway down.  To get there you hav eto drive thru the palm oil tree orchard, a unique sight.  In regards to transportation I strongly recommend arranged transportation.  They pick up up at your hotle and drop you off at the next one.  It works out to being equivocable to renting a car without the stress of trying to find your way around.  google costa rica transportation and some sites will pop up.  Make your hotel reservations in advance if you are going during peak season.

If you want to get away from teh touristy areas, consider visiting Cahuita, south of Limon on the Carribean side.  It is calm and the food is great, it's a sleepy town and home to a coral reef.  I"ve planned a few trips to Costa Rica as I lived there as an exchange student and have loved it every time.  Let me know if there are more specific questions.

  3. May is the start of the Rainy Season, at least that is what they say, the country has some amazing places to see.  The Beaches in Guanacaste is a must, and Arenal or Poas Volcanoes are amazing.  Then there are all the National Parks, rain forests are something everyone should experience at least once.

I lived in Costa Rica for almost 2 years.  Loved it there and plan on returning in the near future.  The only place I would not recommend is the providence of Limon.  Just not that nice in my opinion.

In Costa Rica when it rains it usually pours but only for a couple of hours and then the sun is back out, most rain showers are in the afternoon at least where I lived in Alajuela.  Mornings amazing and nights crisp and cool.

    You will love it!

Check out a beack called Samara, in Guanacaste.  Just beautiful.

Please let me know if I can be of any more help.

    Rick

  4. I went to Costa Rica in 2004 and flew into the Capital San Jose (the air quality isnt to good there and the city is a bit dirty and the weather is moist)

It all depends which parts of CR you go too..I visited San Jose..PLaya Grande..Tamarindo (where all the tourist go which i HATE) and Arenal which was my favorite place in the mountains the weather is soo cool and so green and there is a down pour everyday at 5pm. I stayed at Volcano Lodge which is like 5-7 miles away from Volcano Arenal in the back of the hotel..and at night you can see the red glow from it and the rocks falling. THere is also a hotsprings called Tabacon which is AMAZING..have several hot springs surrounded by trees and flowers so close to the hotel. I like it there because its more secluded.

Tamarino and Playa Grande are soooo HOT..like if you walk barefoot on the beach you will be skipping across..there the price of things are much higher (I bought a picture book there for $30 american and in the lil markets in the city it was $12 american) I try to stay away from where the tourist go.

Its always humid but i prefer cool humid to HOT humid. We also went down to a biological station and stayed 10 days in the rainforest which was crazy humid and so hot...but all in all i would do it all over again becase the country is beautiful. Hope you have a good trip.

Also keep an eye out for taxi drivers..they will take you the LONGEST way possible to where ever you are going just to make more money. Best to just walk...and there is an indoor market in San Jose that I wish I knew the name of but you must go its somewhat in the middle of the san jose and they sell all sorts of stuff from herbs...to all sorts of food and fruit...its amazing. Ok ima stop hope i helped a lil bit bye!
