  1. if you want cheap stick to hostels, but you can alway use an online travel service to book all your stuff at once, i recommend virgin travel, and definately plan side trips like pompeii, pisa, and assisi

  2. In Florence you must eat by a "buca" (restaurant) called "Da Quinto ". It's near Piazza della Signoria (the main square).  In that square there is also Il Cavallino. Very good cooking. Ofcourse taste florence "gelati" (ice-creams) .. wonderful !

  3. rome= 2-3 days. then go to florence by railway. (www.trenitalia.com)

rome has got many good mid range hotels. try to stay near the vatican if u can, lots of eateries there. take hop on bus tour of rome. the hotel u stay will give u details of sightseeing. vatican seeing needs to be advanced booked if u want to avoid long queues.

but dont miss Pisa if you go to florence, its an hours journey by train.

i did all this 6 months ago,

I've travelled really a lot across Italy  and in Rome I would suggest you the  Hotel Zara. Here's the link for yr checking (and eventual booking) http://www.hotelzararome.com/ ; itsn't that expensive,it's clean, familiar, etc.

Too many things to see in Rome.Give a look to this link and you can chose depending on yr preferences : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome

Rome has good and cheap connections (by subway) to all the main spots. If you want to speed it up take a tourist bus.

My suggestion is to eat just pizza and sandwiches for lunch and go to the small trattorias for dinner.Practically everybody can speak a rough English (just don't speak too quick) and to eat well it's enough you ask to the waiters, that are very often the owners, which are specialities they can suggest. They will be always willing to help you and honoured with yr confidence. This advise on where and what to eat is also valid for Florence.

To reach Florence the easiest and cheapest way is by train.

    here's the link http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Florence is also full of works of Arts ;however it's smaller than Rome and mostly of the highlights are in the range of nor 2 square miles, very easy to be visited just by walking.

Here is also a link for what is waiting for you over there http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence

As to the accomodation in Florence I would suggest you a B&B solution. I'm living to close to Florence (20 miles) and I've never experienced an hotel in this town; However here is a link

In both places (as well as wherever) pls beware of pick pockets; they're extremely clever ;my best suggestion is not to bring with you large amounts cash and put yr wallet in a strapped satchel to wear like a belt. Fyi I've been pick pocketed once in my life and I was in NYC.....!!! Last suggestion if you want know some more about Italy and what to do here is to click on my profile and read the tons of infos I've spreaded in all my answers relevant visiting Italy. I've spent for that a lot of my time and I would like they can be read by as much as possible of interested people.

Enjoy yr next trip to Italy

  5. I havnt been over in a couple of years but I do sugest staying at youth hostiles they are fun and unlike the movie they are safe at least in italy and all of western europe

  6. Well, I did it really cheap so I can't recommend hotels but in Florence don't miss Anita's for a great (and inexpensive) steak dinner. It is in all of Rick Steve's guides.

As for transportation from Rome to Florence it is a very easy train trip. Check out Trenitalia.com to lookk at schedule but there are trains leaving really often and it is a beautiful ride.
