I'm planning on a Cruise and one of the ports of call is Cozumel,Mexico.I'm a permanent resident of the US.

Do I need a visa ? If so, what kind of visa do I need.

Actually, right now, you only need a passport if you are coming into the U.S. by land or air. You will not need a passport for coming in by ship until 2008. In other words, at the end of your cruise, when you go through customs, you just need your certified birth certificate and driver's license this year.

No you don't need a visa, but a passport would be helpful. I was just there 2 years ago and you basically need it just in case. Also, as a precaution, when you get your passport, make 2 photocopies of the 1st page (the one with your pic and passport number). Give one to someone you trust stateside and keep one separte from your pp in your luggage. it'll be easier to replace your pp if it gets lost or stolen.

No you don't need a visa. If you have a passport, everything is faster when checking in to the ship and checking out. However, If you don't have a passport you can always use your resident's card.

visit www.travel.state.gov for the most up to date information and the ONLY resource you should trust.  You the customer are responsible for securing proper ID/Visas.  You will be denied boarding during embarkation if you do not have proper ID and a refund will NOT be issued.

You don't need a visa just a Passport when on a cruise they will tell you what you need to have to get back on the ship when you are getting off

When I went on a cruise all I needed was the "Sail & Sign" card that they issue you on board and my state ID or driver's licence but that was before 9/11

Now I hear you don't want to leave the US with out a passport.

Most other countries don't care where your from if you have American money. So get a passport and thats all you'll need.

Oh and if you have never been on a cruise you are going to have the time of your life but sign up for the activitys you want to do cuz they fill up fast.

You don't need a visa if you're part of the cruise. Don't forget to bring your passport, though. You'll need it to enter the USA upon your return.

Are you a US Citizen?  Permanent resident status is different than citizenship.  What you need to do is contact the closest Mexican embassy or consulate to you and discuss the entry requirements for citizens of the country you are from.

If you are a US Citizen, this year you do not need a passport.  However per the US State Department:

"As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries."

No, you don't even need a passport if you go this year.  You are considered 'in transit' when going to Mexico.  Going to Mexico is no problem and they won't even look at your ID.  The problem is coming back into the U,S. so as long as you have what it takes to get back in, you wont have a problem.

As long as youre a citizen you should be fine, I was just there in December and they didnt check anything other than my sail and sign card and dl when we came back onboard

No visa and no passport. The passport thing only applies if you are flying back into the US from an outside port like Mexico and since you are apart of the cruise you just need a birth certificate and a drivers license.
