I'm planning on becoming a Big Brother mentor, any realistic advice?

Wow, what a wonderful commitment you are making, I commend you.

First of all, don't get caught up in the "gifts = love" trap.  Spending TIME with your little one is most important thing you can do.  A close second to that is to LISTEN to them.  They are probably going to be shy at first, but once they open up you will be amazed at what some of these kids have to say.  Listen to them, ask questions, and then listen some more.  Your time and attention is the best gift you can ever give someone.
